It's one of the most discussed item in photography. Should I go for a full frame sensor camera or a crop sensor camera? The answer isn't easy to answer. In this blog I will give my opinion about this subject.
What is the difference between full frame and cop?
Sensor size. A full frame camera has a bigger sensor than a crop sensor camera. Both have their advantages and downsides. You can search the internet on countless of articles describing the exact differences. For me it all depends on your budget and the type of photography you'd like to practice.
What is your budget
If you don't have the budget for a new full frame camera, I'd suggest you buy a camera with a crop sensor. Most important is to buy a lens of good quality. Because it will increase the image quality significantly! A full frame camera with a cheap lens is a waste of money! So don't buy that combo! Only if you can spend the money on a full frame camera and a good quality full frame lens, you might want to buy one.
Kind of photography
Next is to determine which sort kind of photography you want to practice. A crop sensor can have some advantages above a full frame sensor. Especially when you need to cover great distances. The advantage with a crop sensor is the 1.6 crop factor. This means an 100mm zoomlens will become an 160mm zoomlens. This means you will get more zoom! Wildlife- and sport photographers will benefit from this feature. However, if you own a full frame camera you also can buy an extender to get the same result. All-thought it has a minor impact on image quality. But most people do not notice that.
When you practice landscape photography the best thing to have is a full frame camera. Full frame camera's are able to catch more details. You need that during landscape photography. It also doesn't have a crop factor. Which means the amount of mm on your lens is exactly the amount of mm you get. No crop factor! This is helpful when you need to shoot wide angle photo's.
One important thing needs to be said!
The photographer skills makes the biggest impact on any photo! Off-course cheaper equipment will limit your photography when you get better and better. But never forget a good photographer will make excellent photo's with any photo camera.
